Dear Friends of the Department of Veterinary Pathology, AFIP,
Yesterday, 6
Sep, Dr. William Winkenwerder, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health
Affairs, approved the discretionary move of the DOD Veterinary Pathology
Residency (DODVPR). Dr. Winkenwerder went on record saying the military
health system needs to retain this capability. This is a strong
endorsement and the highest level of approval we've received thus far.
This is also a major hurdle cleared, as this decision essentially assures
continued resourcing of the DODVPR. There is a lot yet to be done in
terms of relocating and realigning, but this is a big step forward.
As a reminder, the Base Realignment and Closure plan for the DODVPR is a move to Silver Spring (Forest Glen Annex), MD, co-locating with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The master planning of Forest Glen is now underway. A consulting group has been hired to develop three alternatives to accommodate all of the parties scheduled to move onto the Annex. These alternatives are due by the end of November. The latest timeline for the DODVPR is an administrative realignment in the summer of 2009 followed by a physical relocation in the summer of 2010.
Respectfully,
COL Dale G. Dunn
Chairman
