8/25/05 Dear Friends of the Department of Veterinary Pathology at AFIP, The Base Realignment and Closure Commission voted today to close Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) as recommended by the Department of Defense (DOD) (more details at: http://treets.nbc4.com/svc/lnk.cfm?l=58785534&t=1). The Commission went one step further and amended the original Medical Joint Cross Service Recommendation 4, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, by inserting the following statement: "...AFIP capabilities not specified in this recommendation will be absorbed into other DOD, Federal, or civilian facilities, as necessary;..." This is a significant amendment for the institute as a whole and in my estimation it affirms the previous plan for a discretionary move of the DOD Veterinary Pathology Program to the Daniel K. Inouye Building on the Forest Glen Annex of WRAMC in Silver Spring, MD. I received additional information today from the WRAMC BRAC planners on this discretionary move. While a lot of dominoes have to fall first, the working projection is that our relocation would most likely occur in either FY08 or FY09. More than ever now, we fully expect our pathology training program to remain active and vital to the profession. I will continue to keep you informed of any new developments as they occur. I thank all of you, especially the leadership of the ACVP and STP, for your continued strong support of our program and for your concern over our future. |
